DALLAS — An off-duty Dallas police officer shot a suspect in another shooting outside a school Thursday night.

Just before 7 p.m. the shooting occurred outside Harry Stone Montessori in the 4700 block of Veterans Drive in Dallas. It did not occur on school grounds.

No officers were injured.

Dallas Police Deputy Chief Gil Garza said in a news conference the officer was out of uniform and headed to a family function when he saw an altercation. A woman was stopped at an intersection when another car, driven by the suspect, pulled up alongside her. Words were exchanged between the two, then the suspect fired multiple shots into the victim’s vehicle.

The officer witnessed the shooting, got out of his vehicle, and intervened before he shot the suspect.

The suspect and victim in the shooting were both taken to local hospitals in critical condition, though their injuries are thought to be non-life-threatening.

The shooting occurred outside of Harry Stone Montessori on “meet the teacher” night. The main entrances to the school were locked down for a period.

“The word kind of spread through the school that there was some kind of shooting outside, and then they made an announcement over the PA system to all the teachers in the classrooms that there was a lock down,” said parent Michael Evans.
