In 2013, the Democrats in charge made a drastic change in policy. They implemented the start of the “nuclear option.” That meant that a simple majority in Congress could be used to push through some appointments made by the President. Normally, the Senate would have to have 60 “yes” votes to approve anything.

At the time, Democrats were thrilled with this policy change, although a few were worried about the future. If the Democrats weren’t in control, it meant that the Republicans could then push forward certain appointments with a simple majority. It was a risk that the Democrats just had to take.

Those few Democrats who were worried about the future were right. Now that Republicans have control in the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives, they can use this nuclear option to push forward appointments made by President Trump.
