National Geographic Reports: ‘The Campaign to Eliminate Hell’

This is from CNSNews.

These theologians will find out Hell is real after they draw their last breath.

Jesus warned us of such people.

in the book of Matthew Jesus gives us this warning,

Matthew 7:15King James Version (KJV)

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

National Geographic recently posted an article on its website about a group of Christian theologians who are trying to eliminate the concept of hell.

Writer Mark Strauss observes that according to pew, the number of Americans who believe in hell has dropped from 71 percent to 58 percent. Strauss interviews theologians who believe that the concept of eternal punishment is being replaced by “annihilationism,” which holds that those whom God does not save will simply cease to exist.

Strauss:

“Everlasting torment is intolerable from a moral point of view because it makes God into a bloodthirsty monster who maintains an everlasting Auschwitz for victims whom he does not even allow to die,” wrote the late Clark Pinnock, an influential evangelical theologian

“What if the muting of hell is due neither to emotional weakness nor loss of Gospel commitment?” writes Edward Fudge, whose 1982 book, The Fire That Consumes, is widely regarded as the scholarly work that jump-started the current debate. “What if the biblical foundations thought to endorse unending conscious torment are less secure than has been widely supposed?”

Fudge is among those who endorse an alternative doctrine, known as “annihilationism” or “conditional immortality,” which holds that, after death, sinners simply cease to exist, while those who are saved enjoy eternal life under God’s grace. Although it’s not a positive outcome for the wicked—in fact, it amounts to spiritual capital punishment—it’s deemed a far more merciful and just fate than an eternity of torture.

Traditionalists are pushing back at this doctrine, which they view as heresy born out of misguided sentimentality. But, annihilationists believe they have already made significant inroads within the evangelical community.

My prediction is that, even within conservative evangelical circles, the annihilation view of hell will be the dominant view in 10 or 15 years,” says Preston Sprinkle, who co-authored the book Erasing Hell, which, in 2011, debuted at number three on the New York Times bestseller list. “I base that on how many well-known pastors secretly hold that view. I think that we are at a time and place when there is a growing suspicion of adopting tradition for the sake of tradition.”

Strauss also talks to Chris Date, who runs a website called Rethinking Hell. Date explains his view on “conditionalism,” which is another term for annihilationism: “The fate that we conditionalists suggest awaits those who obstinately reject Christ is a fearful one. There is no greater human fear than death. We fight tooth and nail to preserve our lives at all costs. But death isn’t unbelievable and archaic the way that eternal torment is to many.”

Obama: ‘We Are Fortunate to Be Living in the Most Peaceful…Era in Human History’

This is from CNSNews.

How did Obama get this delusional in just 54 short years?

Where is all of the tolerance that Obama spoke about?

It sure is not in America.

Where is all of the prosperity he spoke about?

It sure is not in America.

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama, speaking in Germany on Monday, said we’re fortunate to be living in the “most peaceful” era in human history.

“I want to begin with an observation that, given the challenges that we face in the world and the headlines we see every day, may seem improbable but it’s true. We are fortuate to be living in the most peaceful, most prosperous, most progressive era in human history,” he said.

“That may surprise young people who are watching TV or looking at your phones,” he said, “and it seems like only bad news comes through every day, but consider it’s been decades since the last war between major powers.”

http://www.mrctv.org/videos/obama-we-are-fortunate-be-living-most-peacefulera-human-history

In the same speech, the president warned against complacency, as “dangerous forces” threaten to take the world backward.

Then he announced that he is sending 250 more American special forces troops to Syria: “They’re not going to be leading the fight on the ground,” he said, “but they will be essential in providing the training and assisting local forces that continue to drive ISIL back.”

After touting world peace, Obama moved on to prosperity and progress:

“More people live in democracies, where they live wealthier and healthier and better educated with a global economy that has lifted up more than a billion people from extreme poverty and created new middle classes from the Americas to Africa to Asia.”

Obama noted that tens of millions of people are saved from disease and infant mortality and people are living longer lives.

Around the world we’re more tolerant, with more opportunity for women and gays and lesbians as we push back on bigotry and prejudice,” he said. (He notably did not mention transgenders, a topic that is making headlines back home.)

“If you had to choose a moment in time to be born, any time in human history, and you didn’t know ahead of time what nationality you were, or what gender, or what your economic status might be, you’d choose today,” the president said.

Sheriff Clarke: Slavery Finally Ended Because Blacks Were Armed

This is from CNSNews.

Sheriff Clarke is pissing off liberals with the truth.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. used a recent discussion on criminal justice reform to draw a connection between the end of slavery and the Second Amendment, saying, “the abolition of slavery was inevitably due to the arming of blacks.”

Appearing at a panel on criminal justice reform at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in National Harbor, Md., on March 3, Clarke cited the writings of 19th century abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass in support of gun ownership by fugitive and freed slaves.

“Douglass strongly supported the right of fugitive slaves to have and use weapons to resist kidnapping,” he said. “When government fails to protect the just right of any individual man, that man rests on his original right of self-defense even if it means shooting down his pursuers. Slavery is a system of brute force. It must be met with its own weapons.”

http://www.mrctv.org/videos/sheriff-clarke-slavery-finally-ended-because-blacks-were-armed-i-will-die-fighting-constitution

“He went on to say that freedom was worth fighting for,” Clarke continued. “Slaves plus guns equal freedom. The abolition of slavery was inevitably due to the arming of blacks. Now if you think for one minute that I’m going to cede these rights back to the federal government or any government or any court, you’d better think again.”

A vocal defender of Second Amendment rights, Clarke concluded his statement by holding up a copy of the Constitution and saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, I will fight for your rights under this document like it were my right, and it is. And I will die fighting for this document.”

Clarke was joined on the panel at CPAC by Ken Cuccinelli, former Virginia attorney general, Pat Nolan, director of the American Conservative Union’s Center for Criminal Justice Reform, and Washington Times reporter Kelly Riddell.

David A. Clarke Jr., a Democrat, was elected to a 4-year term as the sheriff of Milwaukee County in 2002, and was re-elected in 2006, 2010 and 2014. In those elections he won, respectively, with 74%, 78%, 74%, and 79% of the vote.

Obama Reminds Audience Constitution Prohibits Him from Staying in Office After End of Term

This is from CNSNews.

Obama says the Constitution prohibits him from staying president and he cares about the Constitution.

Then why is his administration Hell Bent on destroying the First and Second Amendments?

In a speech at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday night, President Barack Obama  laughingly countered a member of the audience who suggested he should stay in office after his term ends by explaining that the Constitution does not allow that.

In his speech, Obama rhetorically stated: “How do we keep America safe and strong without either isolating ourselves or trying to nation-build all over the world?”

Somebody in the audience shouted: “Keeping you as President!”

Obama then said: “Oh, well, I can’t do that.  I can’t do that because of the Constitution.  And I can’t do that because Michelle would kill me.”

http://www.mrctv.org/videos/obama-cant-stay-president-because-constitution-michelle-would-kill-me

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was approved by Congress in 1947 and ratified by the states in 1951, says: “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice, and no person who has held the office president, or acted as president, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected president shall be elected to the office of president more than once.”

Prior to the ratification of the 22nd Amendment, the only president who served more than two terms was Franklin Roosevelt.

Last week, when Obama gave a speech at the White House explaining his plan to take unilateral action on gun control, he said that he believed in the Second Amendment.

“I believe in the Second Amendment. It’s there written on the paper,” Obama said in that speech.  “It guarantees a right to bear arms. No matter how many times people try to twist my words around. I taught constitutional law, I know a little about this. I get it.”

In his speech at the National Prayer Breakfast on Feb. 5, Obama spoke out in defense of freedom of religion.

“Here at home and around the world, we will constantly reaffirm that fundamental freedom–freedom of religion–the right to practice our faith how we choose, to change our faith if we choose, to practice no faith at all if we choose, and to do so free of persecution and fear and discrimination,” Obama said then.

“There’s wisdom in our founders writing in those documents that help found this nation the notion of freedom of religion, because they understood the need for humility,” Obama said. “They also understood the need to uphold freedom of speech, that there was a connection between freedom of speech and freedom of religion. For to infringe on one right under the pretext of protecting another is a betrayal of both.”

Feds Spend Millions to Increase Participation in School Nutrition Programs: Giving Vegetables ‘Cool Names’ Can Help

This from CNSNews.

Now, instead of school children dumping plain vegetables they can dump the vegetables with cool sounding names.

Tom Nutsack (Vilsack) like his boss Bath House Barry is a moron.

(CNSNews.com) – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said on Tuesday that the federal government is giving $8 million in grants to selected public schools and daycare centers across the country to train school nutrition employees and to develop ways to get more children to participate, which could including giving vegetables “cool names.”

“Sometimes by naming the particular vegetables with cool names you can actually encourage young people to participate and take more of carrots than they would otherwise take, if you tell them that it’s X-Ray carrots that they’ll have X-Ray vision by eating carrots,” Vilsack said at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

http://www.mrctv.org/videos/vilsack-encourage-young-people-eat-vegetables-naming-them

Vilsack announced that $8 million in grants is being given to selected schools and daycare centers in the United States, with $2.4 million going to train food service workers and $5.6 million to come up with ways to market the food to the children in those schools.

“It may be the way in which [food] is displayed,” Vilsack said of the latter funding. “It may be who is serving it.

“There may be opportunities for contests and so forth that can encourage more participation,” Vilsack said.

In a press release announcing the grants the agency explained how it planned to encourage participation in its school and daycare breakfast and lunch and “summer feeding” programs, including using “principles from behavioral economics to encourage health choices” and “interactive nutrition education activities.”

As for the training of employees who work in school or daycare kitchens, in July the federal regulation on the hiring, training and education of food service workers was finalized as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, putting in place national standards for these workers.

The act also put in place national standards for nutrition in public schools and daycare centers that receive federal funding across the country.

Tuesday’s press conference is the latest in a series of recent appearances by Vilsack to urge Congress to reauthorize the Act, which expires on Sept. 30.

“For the past three years, kids have eaten healthier breakfasts, lunches and snacks at school thanks to the bipartisan Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which made the first meaningful improvements to the nutrition of foods and beverages served in cafeterias and sold in vending machines in 30 years,” Vilsack said in a press release issued on the grant funding. “Nearly all schools are successfully meeting the standards, and these grants part of our ongoing commitment to give states and schools the additional resources they need.”

Vilsack said criticism of the law – too much waste, excessive cost and low participation – is not sufficient reason to oppose reauthorization and that “now is not the time to roll back these standards. Now is the time for continued forward movement” on national standards for nutrition and food service workers.

Obama Will Remove President McKinley’s Name from Mount McKinley

This is from CNSNews.

I guess the move to change the mountain’s name is because McKinley was a Republican.

Ohio Sen, Rob Portman and House Speaker John Boehner  are gutless nutless wonders.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will change the name of North America’s tallest mountain peak from Mount McKinley to Denali, the White House said Sunday, a major symbolic gesture to Alaska Natives on the eve of President Barack Obama’s historic visit to Alaska.

By renaming the peak Denali, an Athabascan word meaning “the high one,” Obama waded into a sensitive and decades-old conflict between residents of Alaska and Ohio. Alaskans have informally called the mountain Denali for years, but the federal government recognizes its name invoking the 25th president, William McKinley, who was born in Ohio and assassinated early in his second term.

“With our own sense of reverence for this place, we are officially renaming the mountain Denali in recognition of the traditions of Alaska Natives and the strong support of the people of Alaska,” said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

Ohio politicians reacted angrily, although it wasn’t immediately clear if or how they could stop it. Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Ohio, said McKinley deserved to be honored, and invited his colleagues to join him to try to block what he called Obama’s “constitutional overreach.”

“This political stunt is insulting to all Ohioans, and I will be working with the House Committee on Natural Resources to determine what can be done to prevent this action,” Gibbs said.

The announcement came as Obama prepared to open a three-day visit to Alaska aimed at infusing fresh urgency into his call to action on climate change. To the dismay of some Alaska Republicans, the White House has choreographed the trip to showcase melting glaciers and other cherished natural wonders in Alaska that Obama says are threatened by warmer temperatures.

But Obama’s visit is also geared toward displaying solidarity with Alaska Natives, who face immense economic challenges and have warned of insufficient help from the federal government. As his first stop after arriving in Anchorage on Monday, Obama planned to hold a listening session with Alaska Natives. The president was also expected to announce new steps to help Alaska Native communities on Wednesday when he becomes the first sitting president to visit the Alaska Arctic.

At 20,320 feet, the mountain stands as the continent’s tallest, and is still growing at a rate of about one millimeter per year, according to the National Park Service. Known for its majestic views, the mountain is dotted with glaciers and covered at the top with snow year-round, with powerful winds that make it difficult for the adventurous few who seek to climb it.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who had pushed legislation for years to change the name, said Alaskans were “honored” to recognize the mountain as Denali — a change in tone for the Alaska Republican, who had spoken out against Obama’s energy policies in anticipation of his visit to her state.

“I’d like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect, and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska,” Murkowski said in a video message recorded atop the mountain’s Ruth Glacier, with cloudy snow-capped peaks behind her.

But Ohio Sen, Rob Portman and House Speaker John Boehner joined Gibbs in panning the move, although both stopped short of any threat to try to stop it. Said Boehner, R-Ohio: “I’m deeply disappointed in this decision.”

The White House pointed out that McKinley had never visited Alaska.

The state of Alaska has had a standing request to change the name dating back to 1975, when the legislature passed a resolution and then-Gov. Jay Hammond appealed to the federal government.

But those efforts and legislation in Congress have been stymied by members of Ohio’s congressional delegation. Even when Mount McKinley National Park was renamed Denali National Park in 1980, the federal government retained Mount McKinley as the name of the actual peak.

The White House cited Jewell’s authority to change the name, and Jewell issued a secretarial order officially changing it to Denali. The Interior Department said the U.S. Board on Geographic Names had been deferring to Congress since 1977, and cited a 1947 law that allows the Interior Department to change names unilaterally when the board fails to act “within a reasonable time.” The board shares responsibility with the Interior Department for naming such landmarks.

The peak got its officially recognized name in 1896, when a prospector was exploring mountains in central Alaska, the White House said. Upon hearing the news that McKinley, a Republican, had received his party’s nomination to be president, the prospector named it after him and the name was formally recognized.

Obama won’t personally visit the mountain during his tour of Alaska. He’ll spend much of the trip in Anchorage, south of the peak, where Obama will speak at a climate change summit on Monday. While in Alaska, Obama also planned to meet with fishermen in Dillingham, hike a glacier in Seward and cross the Arctic Circle to visit the rural town of Kotzebue.

In an attempt to show Obama wasn’t coming to Alaska empty-handed, the White House on Sunday also announced plans to create a “young engagement program” to help rural and Alaska Native youth in the Arctic, along with new funding for local fish commissions and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advisers.

Charlie Daniels on America: ‘We Are Due a Day of Reckoning’

This is from CNSNews.

Charlie Daniels is saying the same things that Conservatives have been saying about handouts for years.

God also said to care for the widows, orphans, elderly and the disabled.

Here is a quote from Paul in a letter to the Thessalonians,

2 Thessalonians 3:10King James Version (KJV)

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

Charity – the act of giving money, food, or other kinds of help to people who are poor, sick.

Federal entitlements, regardless of whatever clever antonym or fancy bureaucratic name they go by are actually charity, or at least that is what they started out as.

I believe in charity, but sometimes I think I have a much different definition than many people, and definitely a different definition from the one the government operates on. However, what the government practices is not actually charity, but patronage.

Now put aside your politics, your political correctness, your automatic rhetorical responses and answer these questions honestly.

Is any able-bodied person entitled to spend their lives sponging on the federal or state dole while you work hard to make a living and pay the taxes that support them?

Does anybody have the right to bring children into this world and walk away without ever paying a cent for their support, leaving the cost of their upbringing to the taxpayers?

If your answers to the two above questions was no, then you should be as angry, disgusted and disillusioned as I am. I’m fed up with the bogus disability claims and men who father scores of children and are never held accountable for their welfare.

There are men who go through life carelessly fathering dozens of children who will never even know his name. They leave behind whole families of underprivileged kids who will never have a decent chance at life, raised in a hard scrabble, hand-to-mouth existence, in an environment where dodging bullets is a way of life and the local drug dealer is the most respected person in the neighborhood.

People say that we’ve gone so far into the entitlement direction that there is no way to rectify it, but actually, there is a very simple way to fix this problem.

To qualify for public assistance, the mother of the child should be required to identify the father, a simple task in this era of DNA testing. The father then either supports his children, all his children, or goes to jail until they all reach the age of majority.

If he has fathered multiple children, then he should have multiple jobs. No copouts, and no exceptions.

Just start this program, let the word get around and watch the birth rate of fatherless children fall like a brick.

There are some who draw a disability check from the government and then go out and participate in sports and other strenuous exercises, no more disabled than a racehorse.

That person – after medical exams to prove the sham – should be taken off assistance, spend a year in jail and be forced to pay back the money they’ve already been paid.

Drastic measures?

Absolutely, but things have gone so far that nothing less than drastic measures will ever turn it around.

There is an eventual price to pay for socialism and politicians who consider the federal treasury to be their own personal piggy bank to be used as additional campaign funds and public relations. They buy votes and good will for their party on any whimsical foolishness they can push through Congress.

Social Security funds should be identified, locked away and never allowed to be touched by profligate politicians.

Every time you buy a gallon of gas you are paying into a fund that is supposed to maintain the highways. But take it from one who spends around 125 nights a year up and down the highways of America, a lot of our interstates and federally maintained highways are like washboards with pot holes.

What happened to the highway money?

The truth of the matter is folks, our federal government officials, both parties included, have proven themselves incapable of handling public funds. They cannot police the double-dipping welfare cheats without the guts to face down any problem that could possibly cost them votes.

If Social Security had been handled by investing part of everybody’s assessments in the private sector, with the government forbidden to touch it, the program would be fat and solvent now, actually capable of sustaining a good lifestyle for retirees.

If the highway funds could actually be put into a lock box and honestly handled without political patronage and cronyism, our highways would be in perfect condition.

If the welfare and Medicare cheats were identified, prosecuted and jailed, that problem would soon go away.

We are fast coming down to having, for all practical purposes, a one party system in America. This party is neither Democrat or Republican, but a hybrid, socialist in policy and so big that bureaucracies are tripping all over each other. Stupid regulations cripple and alienate industry, and the entitlement roles and the national debt grows by leaps and bounds.

We are due a day of reckoning.

And make no mistake about it, it’s coming.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops and the peace of Jerusalem

God Bless America

Kerry : ‘I Have No Specific Knowledge of a Plan by Iran to Actually Destroy Us’

This is from CNSNews.

Just think, this clueless twit wanted to be president.

I guess the chants of Death to America do not mean anything to Lurch Kerry.

(CNSNews.com) – Secretary of State John Kerry says he does not know whether the Iranian regime truly wants to destroy America, but views its policy as one “of opposition to us and of great enmity.”

When Kerry appeared before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday to defend the Iran nuclear agreement, Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) asked him about Tehran’s policy in the light of the “death to America” chants common at events presided over by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Hasan Rouhani.

“It is the policy of the ayatollah – if you can answer for him – that Iran wants to destroy the United States?” Poe asked Kerry. “Is that still their policy, as far as you know?”

“I don’t believe they’ve said that. I think they’ve said ‘Death to America’ in their chants, but I have not seen this specific.”

http://www.mrctv.org/videos/kerry-says-i-have-no-specific-knowledge-plan-iran-actually-destroy-us

“Well, I kind of take that to mean that they want us dead,” Poe said. “That would seem like that would be their policy. He said that. That – you don’t think that’s their policy?”

“I’m not mincing words,” he continued. “Do you think it’s their policy to destroy us?”

“I think they have a policy of opposition to us and of great enmity, but I have no specific knowledge of a plan by Iran to actually destroy us,” Kerry replied.

“I do know that the rhetoric is uh, is beyond objectionable,” he said. “I know that we, you know, are deeply concerned with Iran’s behavior in the region, deeply concerned with their past activities. Which is why President Obama felt –”

As Poe interrupted to ask a further question, Kerry interjected, “If they did want to destroy us, they’ve got a much better shot of doing it if they had a nuclear weapon.”

The administration contends that the negotiated agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) cuts off the various pathways Iran has to developing a nuclear weapons capability.

Kerry, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew faced a grilling by members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and, last week, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Skeptical lawmakers, Democrats among them, raised numerous concerns about elements of the deal – including the fact it provides what the State Department contends is the world’s foremost terror-sponsoring regime with more than $100 billion in frozen assets early on – and much more in the longer term as sanctions are removed.

Congress has until mid-September to review and potentially vote on the JCPOA.

President Obama has pledged to veto any resolution that rejects the agreement; its opponents would have to garner a two-thirds majority to override such a move.

Obama, ‘Most Stymied’ Over Gun Control, Vows Not to Give Up in Final 18 Months

The Second Amendment was written to protect us from tyrannical governments not to allow us to hunt.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Thomas Jefferson

We must remain vigilant.

CNSNews.com) – President Obama on Thursday pledged to use his last 18 months in office to work on gun control, calling it “the one area where I feel that I’ve been most frustrated and most stymied.”

“If you ask me where has been the one area where I feel that I’ve been most frustrated and most stymied, it is the fact that the United States of America is the one advanced nation on earth in which we do not have sufficient, common-sense gun safety laws – even in the face of repeated mass killings,” he told the BBC in an interview.

“And if you look at the number of Americans killed since 9/11 by terrorism, it’s less than 100. If you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence, it’s in the tens of thousands,” Obama continued.

“For us not to be able to resolve that issue has been something that is distressing, but it is not something that I intend to stop working on in the remaining 18 months.”

In the U.S., at least 34 Americans have been killed in terror attacks since 9/11. Those attacks include the 2009 killing of 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and the Chattanooga, Tennessee shootings last week which cost the lives of four U.S. Marines and a sailor.

Abroad, another 363 U.S. citizens have been killed in terror attacks since 9/11, according to data accumulated from State Department country reports on terrorism – or in years where data is incomplete, from the department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs’ record of citizens killed due to “terrorist action.”

The annual breakdown of terrorist fatalities abroad is 24 in 2014, 16 in 2013, 10 in 2012, 17 in 2011, 15 in 2010, 9 in 2009, 33 in 2008, 19 in 2007, 28 in 2006, 56 in 2005, 74 in 2004, 35 in 2003 and 27 in 2002.

Double-Digit Premium Hike Requests Signal Start of Obamacare ‘Death Spiral’

This is from CNSNews.

Listen to Obam’s promise of savings with Obamacare.

Promises that were a lie, but, his sheeple believed him.

(CNSNews.com) —  Obamacare is exhibiting early signs of a “death spiral” as hundreds of insurance plans listed on the federally-run exchanges in 37 states and the District of Columbia request double-digit premium increases for 2016, says David Hogberg, a health care analyst and senior fellow at the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR).

A “death spiral” – which is the insurance pool equivalent of a bankruptcy – occurs when rising premiums force younger, healthier people to drop their insurance coverage due to the increased cost. But their exodus leaves the remaining “risk pool” older, sicker and more expensive to insure than before, necessitating further rate hikes.

Thirteen percent of the people who signed up for Obamacare in 2015 have already been dropped from coverage because many of them failed to pay their share of the subsidized premiums, The New York Times reported.

And that’s before the premiums on many policies are due to skyrocket next year.

In an Oct. 4, 2008 speech in Newport News, Va., then-Sen. Barack Obama promised that if elected president, he would reform the nation’s health care system, adding that “we’ll start by reducing premiums by as much as $2,500 per family.”

But in 2016, six years after President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law, Obamacare premiums for hundreds of thousands of Americans will be going up, not down.

Under the Affordable Care Act, state insurance regulators have until August to decide whether to approve or deny steep premium hikes for next year, which are inducing “sticker shock” even after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that those enrolled in the federal exchanges were eligible for government subsidies.

“Unfortunately, those polices are on borrowed time,” Hogberg noted. “Eventually, older and sicker customers will purchase those policies, the rates will go up, and the young and healthy will flee the exchanges. At that point the death spiral will be in full gear. The insurance rate hikes for 2016 are just the beginning.”

“In the end, the exchanges are not sustainable, and free-market based reform of our health care system will be necessary,” Hogberg predicted.

According to HealthCare.gov, “the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that insurers planning to significantly increase plan premiums submit their rates to either the state or federal government for review. The threshold for this requirement is 10%.”

NCPPR found that 231 plans listed on Obamacare exchanges in 37 states and the District of Columbia have requested double-digit premium hikes of at least 10 percent for 2016, nearly double the number of plans (121) that did so for 2015.

Another 126 plans want to raise their rates by 20 percent or more in 2016, compared to the 21 plans that made a similar request in 2015.

For example, eight plans listed on the District of Columbia exchange have requested 2016 premium hikes ranging from 10.13% for Group Hospitalization and Medical Services, Inc.’s (GHMSI) BluePreferred Multi-State Plan- Individual to 20.44% for the company’s BluePreferred Multi-State Plan- Small Group policies.

GHMSI cites “projected increases in medical and pharmacy claims due to cost and utilization trend impacts as well as change in projected pool morbidity” as reasons for raising its premiums.

But some requested rate hikes are much higher.

On April 13, Aetna Life Insurance Co. submitted a request for a 59.71% premium hike for its Aetna Fee for Service-Small Group plan in Virginia, effective Jan. 1, 2016.  This plan is one of 38 that are seeking premium hikes of more than 40 percent for 2016 compared to the zero who made such requests in 2015, according to NCPPR.

“Medical costs are going up and we are changing our rates to reflect this increase,” the company said in its filing, adding that “several requirements related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) also impact these rates.”

A 55.83% rate hike increase was also submitted by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota for its “non-grandfathered individual risk pool” affecting 171,000 policy holders.

“In 2014, the ratio of claims to revenue received (excluding potential federal risk corridor payments) exceeded 115% and resulted in an operating loss in excess of $135 million,” the company explained in its filing.

“High claims trends for the first quarter of 2015 reflect an acceleration in costs, suggesting an extremely low probability of lower claims for the balance of 2015. Our responsibility to set plan year 2016 rates at levels that cover all anticipated costs will result in significant price adjustments for all 2016 individual reformed products.”

Drew Altman, president and CEO of the Kaiser Family Foundation, noted in The Wall Street Journal that instead of decreasing health care spending, as Obama promised ACA would do, it is “picking up speed.”

He added that “greater use of health services as well as more people covered by the ACA appear to be responsible for most of the increase.” The double-digit premium requests for 2016 reflect insurers’ belief that this trend will continue next year.

In January 2014, CNSNews.com asked economist John Goodman, former president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, how Americans would know if Obamacare enters a “death spiral.”

“There won’t be any neon signs that say ‘Death Spiral Underway,’ but what you’ll see is premiums keep rising,” he replied. “And if premiums keep rising, then fewer healthy people will buy in and we may get to a point where you need government subsidies to prop the whole thing up.”
