Man with concealed carry license who killed attempted robber won’t be charged

Chicago police said Monday they won’t charge a customer with a concealed carry license who shot and killed an armed man during an attempted robbery of a store on the city’s southwest side.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says investigators classified the shooting as self-defense after they reviewed witness statements and surveillance videos from the store and currency exchange.

A masked man walked into a store and currency exchange Saturday evening on the city’s southwest side, displayed a handgun and announced a robbery to an employee, Guglielmi said. The gunman then pointed his weapon at another employee and forced her to the back of the store.

The armed customer then shot and killed the man, identified Sunday by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as 55-year-old Reginald Gildersleeve. Other details about Gildersleeve weren’t released.

Gildersleeve’s stepson cast doubt on the police account, the Chicago Tribune reported. “Something doesn’t seem right,” Igbinosa Oronsaye said, adding, “Reggie doesn’t even own a gun. He couldn’t own a gun if he wanted to.”

No one else was hurt during the incident.

The incident could add more fuel to the ongoing debate about whether the proliferation of handguns is responsible for crime or if more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens can actually make people safer.

“It doesn’t get national news attention, but the over 13 million concealed handgun permit holders in the U.S. are getting local news coverage in stopping crime every day,” said John Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center.”

He cited three recent cases in Detroit, where Police Chief James Craig has encouraged citizens to get gun permits and carry weapons as a means of ensuring public safety. In one, a a 23-year-old permit holder stopped three robbers who threatened to kill him; in another, a 63-year-old man stopped would-be robber after he withdrew money from an ATM; and in a third, a pastor stopped a man from attacking him with a brick.

But also last month, a Michigan woman with a concealed carry license shot at shoplifters fleeing a Detroit-area Home Depot store, flattening a tire of their SUV. No one was hurt, and the suspected shoplifters were arrested several days later. The woman faces up to 90 days in jail after pleading no contest to a charge of reckless discharge of a firearm. Two other shootings in which citizens fired at lawbreakers or potential lawbreakers also happened in September in Michigan.

“It’s a slippery slope” when it comes to the question of whether citizens who are licensed to carry guns should intervene in dangerous situations, if at all, Guglielmi said.

“You have situations like this,” he said, referring to the foiled Chicago robbery. “And you have situations that end tragically. The department is not going to advocate for what people should or shouldn’t do.”

Gun Lies

This is from Town Hall.

Let me see a show of hands of anybody surprised by the fact the anti gun crowd lies.

They can only lie and distort polls to advance their agenda.

My town, New York City, enforces rigid gun laws. Police refused to assign me a gun permit. The law doesn’t even let me hold a fake gun on TV to demonstrate something.

But New York politicians are so eager to vilify gun ownership that they granted an exception to the anti-gun group States United to Prevent Gun Violence. New York allowed States United to set up a fake gun store, where cameras filmed potential gun customers being spoofed by an actor pretending to be a gun-seller.

“This a nine-millimeter semi-automatic. It’s a very handy gun. It’s easy to use,” he says. “You can carry it in a purse like that gal from Wal-Mart. Her two-year-old son reaches into her pocketbook, pulls it out, shoots her. Dead, gone, no Mom!”

States United then made that footage into an anti-gun public service announcement. “Over 60 percent of Americans think owning a gun will make them safer. In fact, owning a gun increases the risk of homicide, suicide and unintentional death,” says the video.

It’s a powerful message. But it’s a lie, says John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center. He says that gun control advocates lie all the time.

Lott acknowledges the tragedies. Sometimes a gun in the home is used in a homicide or suicide, or leads to accidental death, but he adds, “It also makes it easier for people to defend themselves — women and the elderly in particular.”

Lott says, “Every place in the world that’s tried to ban guns … has seen big increases in murder rates. You’d think at least one time, some place, when they banned guns, murder rates would go down. But that hasn’t been the case.”

I pushed back: what about people harming themselves?

“There are lots of different ways for people to commit suicide,” Lott said, and researchers have looked at how those tragedies are affected by access to guns. “We find that people commit suicide in other ways if they don’t have guns.”

What about accidents? Lott replies that accidental shooting deaths are relatively rare: “about 500 a year.” That sounds bad, but about 400 Americans are killed by overdosing on acetaminophen each year (most of them suicides), and almost as many Americans drown in swimming pools.

“It would be nice if it was zero (but) consider that 120 million Americans own guns,” Lott says.

Often those guns are used to prevent crime. The homeowner pulls out the gun and the attacker flees.

No one knows how often this happens because these prevented crimes don’t become news and don’t get reported to the government, but an estimate from the Violence Policy Center suggests crimes may be prevented by guns tens of thousands of times per year.

Add politics to the mix and the anti-gun statistics get even more misleading. Gang members in their late teens or early adulthood killing each other get called “children.” Fights between gangs near schools get called school “mass shootings.”

The number of mass shootings in America has been roughly level over the past 40 years, but the New York Times still runs headlines like, “FBI Confirms a Sharp Rise in Mass Shootings Since 2000.” That headline is absolutely true, but only because they deceitfully picked the year 2000 as their start point, and that was a year with unusually few mass shootings. It’s as if the paper wants to make it seem as if mass shootings are always on the rise, even as crime keeps going down.

It all helps stoke paranoia about guns. Some people respond by calling for more controls. Others, fearing the government may ban gun sales, respond by buying more weapons. The number of people holding permits to carry concealed weapons has skyrocketed to 12.8 million, up from 4.6 million just before President Obama took office. Since 40 percent of American households now own guns, anyone who wants to take them away will have a fight on his hands.

Has the increased gun ownership and carrying of guns led to more violence? Not at all. “Violent crime across the board has plummeted,” says Lott. “In 1991, the murder rate was about 9.8 (people) per 100,000. (Now) it’s down to about 4.2.”

I can’t convince my friends in New York City, but it’s just a fact: More guns — less crime.×9&widgetId=2&trackingGroup=69017

Report: Concealed Carry Permits Up; Murder Rate Down

This is from the Last Resistance.

It will be interesting to see how Little Mikey Bloomberg and his merry band of miscreants try to spin this study.

Here’s a stat you likely won’t hear about in the national media, mainly because it corroborates the idea that more guns equals less crime. Concealed carry permits are on the rise, and the murder rate in the U.S. is declining.

Liberals of course would be quick to point out that a correlation does not imply causation. Funny that they’d say that when they push manmade global warming in spite of the fact that rising carbon emissions don’t even correlate with rising global temperatures. It’s just a game of pick and choose, I guess.

A recent report showed that concealed carry permits are up, while the murder rate is down. Breitbart reported:

A report set to be released on July 15 shows that concealed carry permits have surged since 2007, while at the same time murders and violent crime have decreased by “25 percent.”

The study was conducted by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC).

According The Washington Times, the CPRC study shows the number of concealed carry permits increased “from 4.6 million [in 2007] to over 12.8 million” now. And the number of permits sought increases with each passing year.

For example, “over 1.7 million new permits were issued [in 2014],” which represents a “15.4 percent increase” over the number issued the year before. The CPRC report also shows that concealed carry permits are no longer just a guy thing, either. Rather, since 2007 “permits for women have increased by 270 percent” while permits for men have increased “by 156 percent.”

Throughout this surge in concealed carry permitting, murder and violent crime rates have fallen. The rate for murder fell from “5.6 to 4.2 per 100,000, about a 25 percent drop.” Violent crime fell “25 percent” as well.

We just reported on an incident in Texas where three masked men tried to rob a convenience store. If the clerks had not been armed, they would have likely died. The robbers barged in and immediately started shooting at one of the clerks. It was only because the clerk started shooting back that their lives were spared. And two of the suspects who got shot ended up dying.

Those kinds of cases are on the rise, because more people are arming themselves. Murders are declining, but justifiable homicides might be rising. In other words, criminals are still trying to commit their crimes, but because of an increasingly armed populace, many of them are being killed by their intended victims in self-defense.

Bad Daddy’s Burger bar bans lawful guns

Bad Daddy Burger Barn most not mind losing money that firearms owners would spend there.

I guess Bad Daddy does not care about the possibility of dead customers due to his gun free zone.

As we all know gun free zones equal target rich zones.

American society is slowly getting used to the idea that good people carry guns. Some, like the gentle sheepdog, go about their daily business, with no one the wiser. But if trouble arises, they are willing to jump in, bare the fangs, and stand against the predators of society, as reported by the Crime Prevention Research Center.

Still others, more akin to the porcupine will use their defensive weapons to defend their own lives, and those of their immediate loved ones. Mind you, there is not a clear, distinct line between these two. If Mr. Pork U. Pine sees a child being victimized, he may quickly morph into Mr. Sheep Dog, unsheathing his hidden fangs against the predator.

In Tennessee as in many other ‘free’ states, not only are people getting used to the aforementioned idea, more and more are carrying (no permit required) in their vehicles, and about half a million Tennesseans have opted to get training, background checked, and get a carry permit.

But some elected employees, their bureaucratic minions, and some business owners still seemingly are incapable of discernment relative to armed citizens. This column has reported extensively on the struggle between legally armed citizens and the Town of Farragut. A number of businesses, also, have been reported on in this column.

And there are still other holdouts – Today, in search of a new eating experience, we decided to stop into Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, but were turned away by the sign at the door. A phone call from the parking lot resulted in a conversation with a manager. He advised that they have multiple locations (Denver, CO, Knoxville, TN, Charlotte, NC, Triangle, NC, Greenville, SC, Winston-Salem, NC), and they do not welcome lawfully armed individuals.

Permit holders are advised to honor their wishes and stay away. Advise your unarmed friends, too, that so-called gun-free zonestoo often become predator-empowerment-zones.

FBI Shaped Report To Suggest Increase In Mass Shootings, When They’d Actually Been HALVED

This is from Bearing Arms.

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.”
Mark Twain

We’re rapidly reaching a point where no part of the Executive Branch can be trusted.

The stunning revelation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation shaped data on mass shootings in an apparent bid to generate support for gun control is just the latest crooked action by a rogue Obama Administration.

John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center says that the FBI’s data shows signs of intentional manipulation.

FBI figures released last September appear to show so-called “mass shooter” attacks and deaths have dramatically increased since 2000. The report asserted there were a total 160 such incidents in public places between 2000 and 2013, with attacks dramatically increased to 17 in 2013 from just one in 2000. The statistics also showed murders jumping to 86 from just seven over the span.

But Lott’s group said a major flaw is the fact that the data was gleaned from news reports, and noted recent accounts were more accessible, and thus over-represented. Recent cases of the far more common “active shooting incidents” were added to legitimate cases of mass shooting incidents, making the more recent years covered by the report appear to have a large increase in both mass shootings and deaths from them.

The media most often took the numbers at face value, allowing for the perception of an increase in mass shootings and deaths from them, Lott said. A counter report by the CPRCshows that if the biases and errors were corrected, the Bureau’s data would show that the annual growth rate for homicides in mass shootings had been cut in half, Lott said.

He suspects manipulation, and not merely mistakes.

“The administration has obviously been willing to do a lot to push for gun control; with everything from ‘Operation Choke Point’ to ‘Fast and Furious,’ and this is just part of that push. Given the level of politicization in [the] Department of Justice, this is not particularly surprising.”

Another researcher interviewed in the article assets that while the media certain ran with the false data, he puts the blame on the media for misinterpreting the FBI’s report.

So is spreading this false claim the FBI’s fault, or the media’s fault?

As a general rule, the media is full of people who are intellectually lazy, who are not experts in their fields, and who have overt political biases which are easily exploited.

As most reporters are predisposed towards an anti-gun viewpoint, their confirmation bias is exploited by those (in this instance, the FBI) who want to use the reporters to shape a false narrative.

The FBI intentionally wrote their report in such a way that it would likely be read in such a way as to give a false impression. They then refused to correct this false impressions when they went to print, allowing reporters to push a lie.

In this instance, the media were stooges… but they were willing stooges, eager to share a lie that they wanted to believe.

It’s hard to claim that the accomplice was a victim.

What One Recent Study Found About Murder Rates and Concealed Carry Permits Is Likely to Make Gun Owners Smile

This is from The Blaze.

Not much if any coverage from the Obama Media.

More than twice as many Americans now hold concealed carry permits compared to seven years ago, and a new study is pointing out a drop in murder and violent crime rates during this same time frame.

The Crime Prevention Research Center released its Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States report Wednesday, revealing that 11.1 million Americans now hold concealed carry permits, while about 4.6 million carried them in 2007.

With the last concealed carry report from the Government Accountability Office three years ago indicating that about 8 million Americans held permits, the research center said its data analysis shows concealed carry permitting is “growing at faster and faster rates.”

The report also notes that based on data from 2007 and estimates from 2013 murder rates have fallen about 22 percent and violent crime rates have fallen by the same percentage as well.

The report acknowledges that many factors, not just the number of concealed carry permits, contribute to crime rates in different areas. Looking though at how crime rates varied before and after there were changes to permitting rules, “our analysis suggests that each 1 percentage point increase in the percent of the adult population holding permits is roughly associated with a 1.4 percent drop in the murder rate.”

The report says that more than 10 percent of the adult population in South Dakota, Indiana and Alabama now hold concealed carry permits, while 8 percent of the adult population in eight other states have permits.

Though the rate of permits being issued has grown, the report details how it might have more difficult to obtain them over time:

  • Each $10 increase in fees reduces the percent of adults with permits by about a half a percentage point.
  • Each 10 years that the permit law is in effect increases the percent of adults with permits by 1.5 percentage points.
  • Giving government officials discretion in who gets permits, reduces the percent of adults with get permits by more than two-thirds.

For those who might argue that increasing the number of concealed carry permits could lead to more crime, the report delves into whether permit holders are law abiding.

“Consider the two large states at the front of the current debate, Florida and Texas: Both states provide easy web access to detailed records of permit holders,” the report says. “During over two decades, from October 1, 1987 to May 31, 2014, Florida has issued permits to more than 2.64 million people, with the average person holding a permit for more than a decade.3 Few — 168 (about 0.006 [percent]) — have had their permits revoked for any type of firearms related violation, the most common being accidentally carrying a concealed handgun into a gun-free zone such as a school or an airport, not threats or acts of violence. It is an annual rate of 0.0002 percent.”

It also notes that the already low rate of permits being revoked is also declining.

“Over the last 77 months from January 2008 through May 2014, just 4 permits have been revoked for firearms-related violations. With an average of about 875,000 active permit holders per year during those years, the annual revocation rate for firearms related violations is 0.00007 percent — 7 one hundred thousandths of 1 percentage point,” the report says.

The Crime Prevention Research Center was created by economist and researcher John Lott earlier this year to “advance the scientific understanding of the relationship between laws regulating the ownership or use of guns, crime and public safety.”

“When you allow people to carry concealed handguns, you see changes in the behavior of criminals,” Lott told Fox News about the recent study’s findings. “Some criminals stop committing crimes, others move on to crimes in which they don’t come into contact with victims and others actually move to areas where they have less fear of being confronted by armed victims.”
