Maria von Maltzan – a German resistance heroine, by Leslie Wilson

This is from The History Girls.

 This is a powerful story.

Everyone should know about this brave woman.

Maria and Hans
In 1943, Maria von Maltzan, a German aristocrat, took Hans Hirschel, her Jewish lover into her Berlin apartment to hide him from the Nazis. It was the time when the last Jews were supposed to be ‘cleansed’ out of Berlin. Since Hans had ingeniously faked his own suicide, he was registered as dead, and for a long while, no suspicion fell on Maria; but one day a neighbour handed her a yellow card, which she said a gentleman who’d come calling for her had dropped. It said: Jews are living at Maltzan’s.
Hans had brought a sofa with a hollow base with him, when he came to her,  and when she was out during the daytime (she was a veterinary surgeon) Hans hid in there, with a bottle of liquid codeine to keep his troublesome chronic cough at bay. Maria had thoughtfully drilled breathiGng holes in the base.
(That makes me think of hamsters or mice in a box, which I realise now is why Raf, in Saving Rafael, accuses Jenny and her mother of keeping him like a little animal in a cage. I didn’t think about that when I was writing it, though.)

Now she went back to her apartment, and told Hans to get into the sofa base, because the Gestapo were coming. Two men duly arrived at half past two and ransacked the apartment for three and a half hours. While they did this, she threw a ball for her two dogs, and when the Gestapo asked her if she could stop because it was getting on their nerves, she said, calmly, that her dogs were missing their walk because of the search and had to have some exercise.

She could get away with this because she was an aristocrat, and her father had been a high-ranking Army officer, and his portrait was watching them intimidatingly from the wall.

Then they demanded that she open the sofa-bed, which was made of heavy mahogany. She said it was stuck; she had bought it four weeks ago and had tried to open it several time.  ‘If you don’t believe me,’ she added, while the Gestapo men heaved and grunted in their heavy uniforms, ‘you can get your pop-guns out and shoot holes in it – but if you do that, I insist that you give me a coupon for new upholstery material and that you pay for the repairs. And I want that in writing now.’

The Gestapo men decided this was too much for them to handle, and they left. When Maria let Hans out, he was white as chalk and drenched with sweat.

Maria in her youth

The Gestapo didn’t give up, though; they hung around in the courtyard at night, listening for sounds from the apartment. So Maria took Hans to a new, temporary, hiding place and warned the other Jews who came to her home to stay away. Then, one cold night, she poured water on the narrow tiled alleys that led to the courtyard, and then stretched thin wires across the alleys too. Of course, the Gestapo tripped over the wires and then went skidding across the ice. Maria called the police and told them she had burglars; she also called the butcher from over the way, who arrived brandishing his axe. She wrote, in her memoir: ‘So now I had everything I wanted. The Gestapo in the courtyard were faced by me, the police, and the axe-wielding butcher. I pretended to be hysterical with fear.’ The Gestapo stopped visiting the courtyard at night.

Maria was a Silesian countess, so a countrywoman of my mother’s. When the First World War broke out, she and her many brothers and sisters, infected by jingoistic frenzy, tried to burn their French governess – luckily they were found out and the governess rescued. As a child, she also threatened to throw the ex-King of Saxony into a lake, when she’d taken him to see some nesting birds and he wanted to disturb them: ‘Unfortunately, I shall have to drown Your Majesty.’

When she was a veterinary student in Breslau (now Wrocław), she was short of money (of course) and the family jeweller paid her to wear his stock of pearls. He said she had just the right kind of skin to help them keep their lustre. She wore these valuable strings under her blouse every day, and nobody ever noticed. ‘Nice easy money,’ she said.

Later, she became a fervent anti-Nazi and helper of Jews. She was involved with the Swedish Church in Berlin (the organisation who I used to fictionally help Raf and Jenny out of Germany). I don’t have room here to go into all her exploits, but she also helped animals escape conscription by giving them drugs that made them temporarily ill. Her view was that the dogs and horses hadn’t consented to fight for Hitler, so why should she help force them to?

Maria in later life

Her autobiography, Schlage die Trommel und Fürchte Dich Nicht (Beat the Drum and Fear Not – which is unfortunately not available in English – is an amazing read, and as it unfolded, I did begin to wonder what this woman was on? She seemed utterly tireless as well as staggeringly courageous. But then she did let out that she had become addicted to amphetamines, which, as a vet, she found it quite easy to get hold of. After the end of the war, Maria was prosecuted, had her licence to practise withdrawn, and taken into a brutal withdrawal centre, run by people who appeared to have got their training in concentration camps. The court didn’t appear to care about her heroism, or even consider the stresses she had been under. Sadly, though she married Hans, the marriage didn’t last. They remained good friends, though.

She finished her life in the Berlin area of Kreuzberg – where her pet monkey enlivened the place by periodically getting out of the flat and calling on the neighbours. The animal was very well-behaved, they told her. She liked being surrounded by punks and ‘alternative’ young people, and when she walked her dogs in the evenings, she relished the sight of the Turks who made the area colourful and lively – and the fact that they got on well with their German neighbours. Her parting comment on her life was: ‘I wasn’t bored for a moment.’

A plaque on the house Maria lived in during the Nazi period, commemorating her resistance work
I have discovered that there is a chapter about her in a book called: Women Heroes of World War II:  by Kathryn Attwood, published last year. Part of her story is also told in Leonard Gross’s book: The Last Jews in Berlin. The quotes from her memoir were translated by me.  The title Schlage die Trommel und Fürchte Dich Nicht is taken from the opening line of a poem by the German Jewish Heinrich Heine.

Is the Department of Homeland Security Obama’s Gestapo?

This is from Godfather Politics.

The Department of Homeland Security is on the way to being the new Gestapo.

While the new Obama Civilian Security is to be the next SS.

DHS Gestapo

When Adolf Hitler made his rise to power, he established the Secret State Police in 1934, headed by Heinrich Himmler.  The German name for them is Geheime Staatspolizei.  Taking the bolded and underlined letters from the newly formed entity you get the more familiar term, Gestapo.

The role of the Gestapo was to spy on the German people and identify any and all opposition to Hitler’s Third Reich.  They were given full authority to investigate and report or suspect cases of criminal attacks against the Nazi Party along with cases of sabotage, espionage and treason.  What made them so deadly and sinister was that they were also given authority to act without any judicial oversight.  They became the prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner of anyone that stood in Hitler’s way.

The Gestapo was given a sizeable budget and access to all the weapons, ammunitions and spying devices they wanted.  Once they established their dark reputation, they used all of those devices and weapons far too frequently.  Within a few years, no one dared to say or do anything that might be considered critical of the Nazi Party and its leaders.  If they did, the Gestapo or its sister agency, the SS (Security Service) moved in and took care of the alleged problem.

Eighty years later, Barak Obama talks about creating a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, strong and as well-funded as the US military.  In 2008, Obama talked about his desire to create his civilian army, but many of the references to that speech have mysteriously disappeared.  However, WND posted the following clip of Obama’s admission:

Joseph Farah of WND also points out that the concept of a civilian national security force seems to be the idea of Robert Gates, then Secretary of Defense under President George W. Bush.  Using Gates’ idea for the civilian force, it was no surprise to some that Obama kept him on as his Secretary of Defense.

Under Obama’s supervision, the Department of Homeland Security has been purchasing thousands of assault weaponsover a billion rounds of ammunition, of which 450 million are hollow-points, bulletproof vests, riot gear, bullet-proof traffic stops and other equipment one would readily associate with an army.  Nearly 200,000 rounds of ammunition are specifically designed for sniper rifles.  There are also plans to place 30,000 drones in our skies to spy on us.

If that makes you nervous, the Obama administration has also given approval for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to purchase 46,000 rounds of .40 caliber hollow points.  Supposedly, they were purchased for NOAA’s Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement.

If the concept of a massive well-armed civilian national security force makes you nervous, consider the fact that Obama is currently tailoring the top military leaders to fit his agenda.  Those that say they are willing to shoot American citizens if ordered to, are being promoted and placed in positions of top leadership.  Those that won’t fire upon fellow Americans are being replaced by those that will shoot you and me.

If you look at the DHS website, you will see the following:

“The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission: to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This requires the dedication of more than 240,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector. Our duties are wide-ranging, but our goal is clear – keeping America safe.”

Reading this carefully, I see that they believe it is their job to spy on every American in the name of national security.  Cybersecurity means they are monitoring our emails, web posts and internet searchers.  Aviation encompasses the 30,000 drones that they plan to fly overhead.

DHS also has oversight of ATF and the Border Patrol.  Although they fail to secure the border and protect Americans, it does give the DHS additional armed personnel already on the ground and awaiting instructions, and now they have plenty of ammunition for whatever those orders are.

Why else would Obama and the Democrats be pushing gun control legislation requiring every American to register their guns, be fingerprinted, photographed, and have a background check run on them?  They know that there are over 300 million guns in the hands of private citizens and they want to know where they all are so they can use their superior weaponry to confiscate our guns.

When you add everything up, it seems that the Department of Homeland Security is becoming Obama’s civilian national security force.  With the powers being given to them the weaponry and ammunition they have purchased, they are taking on many of the same aspects of Hitler’s Gestapo and Janet Napolitano may be the next Heinrich Himmler.

Complaints Mount Against Michelle Obama’s New Lunch Menu

This is from Town Hall.

Moochelle has made herself the head of the food Gestapo.

When was Moochelle elected to any office?

Does Moochelle has a background in nutrition?

November the sixth we can fire Moochelle and her husband.

In Wisconsin, high school athletes are complaining about not getting enough to eat each day, due to the skimpy new school lunch menu mandated by the United States Department of Agriculture and First Lady Michelle Obama.

The story we published earlier this week on that subject is unfortunately not unique. Students across the country are complaining about the new school lunch regulations.

Perhaps the real motive is to starve students into slimming down. Just ask students in Pierre, South Dakota who, too, are in an all-out revolt.

“I know a lot of my friends who are just drinking a jug of milk for their lunch. And they are not getting a proper meal,” middle school student Samantha Gortmaker told Keloland.com.

Despite the fact that the new regulations have increased the cost of a lunch 20 to 25 cents per plate, it’s not pleasing students.

Some are throwing away their vegetables while others are adapting to the rules by becoming industrious. In New Bedford, Massachusetts, students have created a black market – for chocolate syrup. The kiddie capitalists are smuggling in bottles of it and selling it by the squeeze, according to SouthCoastToday.com.

Nancy Carvalho, director of food services for New Bedford Public Schools, was quoted as saying that hummus and black bean salads have been tough sells in elementary cafeterias. That means even smaller children are going through the day fighting hunger pains, which can never be considered a good thing.

One government official tried to put the blame on the students.

“One thing I think we need to keep in mind as kids say they’re still hungry is that many children aren’t used to eating fruits and vegetables at home, much less at school. So it’s a change in what they are eating. If they are still hungry, it’s that they are not eating all the food that’s being offered,” USDA Deputy Undersecretary Janey Thornton was quoted as saying.

Ms. Thornton just put her finger on the problem. The government is trying to impose a new diet that children are not accustomed to. It’s not reasonable to expect them to either eat what the government deems healthy or go hungry.

Many will opt to go hungry, and that’s the government’s fault.

Hitler’s Youth Alive in England. Is U.S. Next?

This is from Godfather Politics.

It is already happening here.

Obama has set up websites to report comments about him.

During the reign of Adolf Hitler, his regime formed the Nazi Youth.  Besides indoctrinating them with his fascist ideas, Germany’s youth were taught to report anything and everything about their family, friends and neighbors.  Many kids turned their parents, siblings and best friends in to the Gestapo.  Families, friendships and neighborhoods were torn asunder due to the youth programs and using them to spy on the nation.

A recent report out of Great Britain reveals that school kids are being encouraged to turn in anyone that has not paid their taxes or who in general are not paying their way in society.  If the children learned of anyone, including their own parents, who had not paid their taxes, they were to report it to their teacher who in turn would notify the authorities.

H.M. Revenue and Customs is the equivalent of our Internal Revenue Service.  They have developed an educational module to be used in secondary schools.  This just happens to be the same age group that Hitler’s Youth targeted.  The modules include videos, facts, games and quizzes to “help make teaching financial capacity and citizenship issues relevant and engaging”.

In one particular module, geared for ages 14-16, it teaches the students to “Discuss whether it is good to pay the tax we do, considering the benefits we receive. If it is good, then why do people try not to pay?”The teacher is then instructed to teach about tax evasion in which the students are asked if they know about any incidents of tax evasion in their neighborhoods.

HMRC officials claim that they are not using the program to collect information on possible tax evaders, but a number of people have questioned their denial.  In the eyes of many, the module has similarities to how the Hitler Youth convinced teenagers to inform on those around them.

In some ways, America’s public school system already uses students to report on their families and friends in a number of areas.  I recall hearing from one parent who had the police and child services show up at the door one day.  Her son had told a friend that his mom beat him every day when he got home.  Before the matter could be cleared up, her son and daughter were removed from her house and placed in a foster home.  The mom was charged with child abuse.

After nearly a month, it turns out that her son and his friend were talking about playing basketball and the son told the friend that he and his mom played every day when he got home from school and she beats him every time.  Another student overheard part of the conversation and then reported it to the teacher who in turn reported it to authorities.

Seventy years ago, the Americans were appalled when they learned about Hitler’s Youth and how they were used to spy on family, friends and neighbors.  Seventy years later, the same principle is being taught in the schools of Great Britain and here in the United States.  Why aren’t we appalled this time?  Because as a society, we have fallen that far into moral decay.
