Franklin Pierce’s murky legacy as President

This is from the National Constitution Center.

On this day in 1869, former President Franklin Pierce passed away in New Hampshire. Pierce was regarded as an ethical hard worker, but he struggled as a national leader when he openly advocated for pro-slavery states as a Northerner in the 1850s.

The New York Herald marked his death with the following blunt statement: the “deceased was a man of something more than average ability. He possessed, however, none of the attributes of greatness, and was more of a cautious, studious, and watchful politician than a comprehensive, far-seeing or observant statesman.”

The New York Times also acknowledged that Piece had a difficult presidency.Although his record as a statesman cannot command the approbation of the nation, he still should be followed to the grave with that respect which is due to one who has filled the highest office in the gift of the people — a President of the United States,” it said in an October 9, 1869 obituary.

Pierce assumed his position in the White House in a period of relative calm in 1853, but he had been beset with a personal tragedy before his inauguration.

The President-Elect and his family were traveling in January 1853 when they were involved in a train accident, and Pierce’s young son, Benjamin, was killed. His wife refused to come to Washington and the new President was ill prepared to deal with a series of national crises that were stepping stones to the Civil War.

Pierce had won the Democratic nomination in 1852 thanks to some shrewd moves at the party’s convention, where he played a dark horse role and was able to split, and finally gain support from the backers of James Buchanan and Lewis Cass. Prior to his nomination, Pierce was a House and Senate member from New Hampshire, but he left Washington in 1841 as he and his wife, Jane, became disenchanted with life in the nation’s capital.

Back home in New Hampshire, Pierce was a high-profile attorney and a political operator of sorts. He also served as a volunteer general in the Mexican-American War who had passed out in battle (albeit from a knee injury) and had gained the nickname “Fainting Frank.”

Pierce was able to grab the nomination as a compromise candidate who was seen as a pro-slavery northerner. That appealed to a Democratic party that had endorsed the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act. Pierce defeated his former commander, General Winfield Scott, in the 1852 election, thanks to Scott’s weakness as a campaigner and the overall decline of the Whig Party in national politics.

At his inauguration, President Pierce made it clear where he stood on the issues of slavery, states and the Constitution.

“I believe that involuntary servitude, as it exists in different States of this Confederacy, is recognized by the Constitution. I believe that it stands like any other admitted right, and that the States where it exists are entitled to efficient remedies to enforce the constitutional provisions,” he said. “I fervently hope that the question is at rest, and that no sectional or ambitious or fanatical excitement may again threaten the durability of our institutions or obscure the light of our prosperity.”

Once in the White House, Pierce backed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which overturned the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The Act repealed of the prohibition against slavery in territories north of the latitude 36 degrees 30 minutes, and allowed voters in territories to decide if they wanted slavery. The violence in Kansas and northern repulsion over the Act gave rise to a new political party, the Republicans. Pierce also sought to annex Cuba and he had intervened on behalf of pro-slavery interests in the Kansas fight.

By 1856, Democratic leaders grew tired of Pierce, even though Pierce expected to get nominated again easily at the party’s convention. James Buchanan and Stephen Douglas instead battled for the nomination, with Pierce left on the sidelines.

After leaving the White House, Pierce became a critic of President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and he had to persuade a mob to not destroy his house after Lincoln’s assassination. Pierce died in obscurity in 1869 after years of drinking.

Obama threatens vetoes of bills requiring him to follow the law

This is from The Washington Examiner.

Are you shocked Obama would veto such a bill?

I am not as he has been away with doing what ever he was to do the rule of law and Constitution be Damned.

What makes anyone he will stop being above the law in his own mind?

President Obama is threatening to veto a law that would allow Congress to sue him in federal courts for arbitrarily changing or refusing to enforce federal laws because it “violates the separation of powers” by encroaching on his presidential authority.

“[T]he power the bill purports to assign to Congress to sue the President over whether he has properly discharged his constitutional obligation to take care that the laws be faithfully executed exceeds constitutional limitations,” the White House Office of Management and Budget said Wednesday in a statement of administration policy. “Congress may not assign such power to itself, nor may it assign to the courts the task of resolving such generalized political disputes.”

The lead sponsor of the measure, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said it was designed to curb Obama’s abuse of presidential authority, most notably in his frequent changes to Obamacare.

“We have pursued certain remedies afforded to Congress to address executive overreach but these efforts have been thwarted,” Gowdy said. “This bill is necessary; it will give Congress the authority to defend this branch of government as the Framers and our fellow citizens would expect.”

Obama also threatened to veto another bill by Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., which would require the administration to explain decisions not to enforce laws when those decisions are rooted in policy concerns rather than just constitutional concerns (which the Justice Department is already required to do).

“The American people deserve to know exactly which laws the Obama administration is refusing to enforce and why,” DeSantis said when introducing his bill.

OMB said DeSantis’ law is too burdensome. “The bill would inordinately expand current law, which already requires reports to Congress when non-enforcement of federal law is based on constitutional grounds,” Obama’s team said in a statement of administration policy.

“Federal agencies are continually engaged in the process of determining how to concentrate limited enforcement resources most effectively. … The vastly expanded reporting scheme required by the bill would be unduly burdensome and would place the Attorney General in the unprecedented position of having to be kept informed of and report on enforcement decisions made by every other Federal agency,” the statement continued.

The House is scheduled to vote on both bills Wednesday.

On the same day that DeSantis introduced his bill, Attorney General Eric Holder told Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, that he thought Obama was “probably at the height of his constitutional power” when issuing the delays of Obamacare mandates, though he acknowledged that he couldn’t explain the precise legal analysis.

“When you look at the quality, not just the quantity but the quality, the nature of the executive orders that he has issued, he has usurped an extraordinary amount of authority within the executive branch,” Lee said at the time. “This is not precedented, and I point to the delay — the unilateral delay, lawless delay, in my opinion — of the employer mandate as an example of this. And so, at a minimum, I think he owes us an explanation as to what his legal analysis was

Obama: We’re not repealing Obamacare ‘as long as I’m president’

This is from The Washington Examiner.

Well Mr. President if a Conservative Congress gets elected

in 2014 you will not be able to stop a repeal.

I am personally going to see to it Indiana sends Conservatives

to Congress.

President Obama, in his latest attempt to retool his messaging onObamacare, vowed to spend the rest of his time in office standing by the new health care law, fixing problems that arise and fighting efforts to repeal it.

“Look, I’ve always said I will work with anybody to improve this law and implement it effectively … but we’re not repealing it as long as I’m president,” Obama said Tuesday at the White House.

“We will make it work for all Americans,” Obama added, as the room erupted in applause.

The event was the first in a series of daily promotional events being organized by the White House through Dec. 23, the deadline to register for insurance coverage that will kick in on Jan. 1.

President Obama said the focus on the Affordable Care Act over the last two months has understandably focused on the problem-riddled rollout of the healthcare.gov website and hurdles Americans have faced in signing up for the federal insurance exchanges.

But Obama said the administration is working through those problems and the website is far more functional today than it was on Oct. 1.

“Today the website is working well for the vast majority of users,” he said. “This law is working and will work in the future.”

Monica Weeks, a 26-year-old who suffers from Crone’s disease, introduced Obama and thanked him for fighting for passage of the health care law. She said she began having symptoms of the chronic stomach disorder in 2007 and thanks to Obamacare was able to stay on her parent’s health insurance plan to receive infusions and treatments that would have cost thousands of dollars without insurance.

During his remarks, Obama referenced a patient named Justine receiving cancer treatment at Cleveland‘s University Hospitals because of Obamacare.

“For all the day-to-day fights around the Affordable Care Act, it’s stories like hers that should remind us why we took on this reform in the first place,” he said.

The president’s latest promotion push comes a day after the problem-plagued website handled what the administration officials said was more than 1 million visitors, although the officials did not say how many of those users successfully enrolled.

Obama said just like with most new start-ups, the website is not glitch-free now and will encounter more problems, which he pledged to fix as quickly as possible. Some of those problems include back-end bugs that are still plaguing the website and garbling the application information or losing it for tens of thousands of people who have already signed up for coverage.

“Whatever comes up, we’re going to fix it because we know the ultimate aim is that people have basic security and the foundation for the good health that they need,” he said.

The president also announced that more than 1.46 million people have been added to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program because of expanded services under the new health care law.

The Affordable Care Act offers states additional federal funding to provide Medicaid and CHIP coverage to additional low-income Americans. So far, 24 states and the District of Columbia have accepted the expansion funding while three others are still deciding and 23 have declined.

“We may never satisfy the law’s opponents,” he added. “Some of them are rooting for this law to fail and some are already convinced it has failed. I would advise them to check with the people here today and people all over this country whose lives are affected by this law.”

Hours earlier, critics led by conservative Republicans on Capitol Hill, said the law’s problems extend far beyond the website and the only solution is to repeal the entire law.

“It’s not just a broken website; this bill is fundamentally flawed,” House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday.

“When you look at Obamacare, what you see is a government-centered health care delivery system” and Americans don’t like what they see, he said.

“They want to be able to pick their own type of health insurance, they want to be able to pick their own doctor and they want to be able to pick their own hospital,” he added.

Dennis Miller: ‘Mr. President, if you liked your apology, you can keep it’ [VIDEO]

This is from The Daily Caller.

I will just say it is Miller Time.

On Wednesday’s broadcast of FNC’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” comedian and radio talk show host Dennis Miller reacted to the pitfalls President Barack Obama has faced in recent days due to his 2010 health care reform act, riffing off of Obama’s broken “if you like your health insurance, you can keep it” promise.

Miller said in his view, he hoped Obama had been misleading Americans in the push for Obamacare because otherwise it would indicate a degree of ineptness.

“The only wealthy guy I talk politics with is you,” Miller said. “So you would have to tell me. I will say this. This thing has got so crazy that the Rev. [Jeremiah] Wright lost his health care today and blamed the Jews. Listen, I don’t talk about politics with my friends because, you know what? Obama — Barack Obamas are a dime a dozen — debonair grifters, man. The good friends — they’re hard to come by. I will say this about Obamacare — I hope at this point Barack Obama is simply a liar because, if he is this inept, you and I are Gary Lockwood and Keir Dullea way out past Jupiter with a defective Hal 9000 unit, my friend. We are screwed, and I would like to get home, all right?”

Host Bill O’Reilly tried to get Miller to explain why a lot of Obama’s traditional allies have abandoned him on Obamacare, with the lone exception of Hollywood. Miller warned some of the president’s “devotees” might take it to an ugly place over Obama’s failings.

“Billy, you have got your own thing with Hollywood,” Miller replied. “A lot of my best friends — a lot of my dearest people in the world to me are from Hollywood. So that’s your fight to fight…  I will say, this as far as the press goes and as far as Obama goes, I’m kind of watching what I’m saying right now because I find when zealots, pet notions crater, they get nasty about it. It’s my raccoons at the recycling bin at two in the morning. This is not the time to come in and tell all these people how stupid it is. History will show how stupid it’s been. I would just say this to the president in the nicest terms I can. Mr. President, if you liked your apology, you can keep it, all right? How’s that? All I know is I finally started reading some of Obamacare last night to find out what it’s about. I got to page 1297 — preexisting conditions and is says everything is covered except, quote: ‘Whatever in God’s name Biden has,’ end quote.”

Miller pointed out that the president was being abandoned by his most ardent supporters.

“Listen, man, everybody is cabbing off from this guy,” he added. “The Clintons disengaged. She can’t have the Hester Prynne stink on her. All the devotees are now Judas goating out of the scene. And I tell you what — I think Obamacare is an unfair name for this thing. I don’t think it’s fair to the guy. I think this has to be Barack Obamacare and laid down in history. This was his genius notion and I hope he travels through time with it.”

Texas single mom’s ‘thanks a lot’ letter to Obama goes viral

This is from BizPacReiew.

This mother’s letter says it all.

A Texas single mom’s letter “thanking” President Obama for Obamacare, and all that it entails, has gone viral.

Yolanda (Lana) Vestal posted the letter on herFacebook page, and what started out as a way to vent, became a way for others to share frustration over Obamacare. The single mother of two blasted the president for increased taxes and lavish vacations. The post has received over 63,000 “shares,” according toFreePatriot.org.

Here is Vestal’s letter to Obama:

Dear President Obama,

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all you have done and are doing. You see I am a single Mom located in the very small town of Palmer, Texas. I live in a small rental house with my two children. I drive an older car that I pray daily runs just a little longer. I work at a mediocre job bringing home a much lower paycheck than you or your wife could even imagine living on. I have a lot of concerns about the new “Obamacare” along with the taxes being forced on us Americans and debts you are adding to our country. I have a few questions for you Mr. President.

Have you ever struggled to pay your bills? I have.

Have you ever sat and watched your children eat and you eat what was left on their plates when they were done, because there wasn’t enough for you to eat to? I have.

Have you ever had to rob Peter to pay Paul, and it still not be enough? I have.

Have you ever been so sick that you needed to see a doctor and get medicine, but had no health insurance because it was too expensive? I have.

Have you ever had to tell your children no, when they asked for something they needed? I have.

Have you ever patched holes in pants, glued shoes, replaced zippers, because it was cheaper than buying new? I have.

Have you ever had to put an item or two back at the grocery store, because you didn’t have enough money? I have.

Have you ever cried yourself to sleep, because you had no clue how you were going to make ends meet? I have.

My questions could go on and on. I don’t believe you have a clue what Americans are actually going through and honestly, I don’t believe you care. Not everyone lives extravagantly. While your family takes expensive trips that cost more than most of us make in two-four years, there are so many of us that suffer. Yet, you are doing all you can to add to the suffering. I think you are a very selfish and cold hearted man, who does not care what is best for the people he was elected by (not by me) to represent, but more so out for the glory of your name attached to history. So thank you Mr. President, thank you for pushing those of us that are barely staying afloat completely under water and driving America into the ground. You have made your mark in history, as the absolute worst and most hated president of the United States. God have mercy on your soul!

Sincerely,

Yolanda Vestal

Letter from young med student: ‘Mr. President, I’m hanging up the white coat’

This is from BizPac Review.

Is this a real letter?

How many medical school students and Doctors felt the same way?

We will see rationing of medical care if this beast is not slain.

med studentIt may be impossible to quantify how much economic suffering Obamacare will wreak on the nation, but at least one medical school graduate believes the health care law will destroy the industry he sought to join.

Michael Gordon Lotfi, who said he graduated with top honors from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., wrote the president an open letter, saying he plans to “hang up the white coat,” according to benswann.com. BizPac Review has not contacted Lotfi to verify the information, but the letter is finding its way around the internet as an example of how Obamacare could impact medical professionals.

Mr. President,

I was born at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. My mother would later take a job delivering babies in that same operating room only a couple years later. My parents got a divorce when I was young. There were many times during the summer when she would be forced to take my sister and me to work with her. I vividly remember the child version of myself walking the halls of the same floor I was born on in fascination as the years passed. The anesthesiologists used to bring us candy and watch movies with us. When the holidays came, a nurse by the name of Patty Vaughn (we called her Granny), would have bags of presents for my sister and me. Donna Smith, a surgical first assistant who came to America from Canada to work in a free-market healthcare system, use to babysit us.

Donna’s two-story town-home became a 3rd home (2nd was the hospital). We spent countless nights at her house.

Patty passed away when I was ten. I still remember the last box of moon pies she gave me for Halloween that year. To this day every time I see a moon pie I think of her. Donna helped me through my undergrad at Belmont University. With tuition at $30k/year money was tight. Donna never let me go without a meal.

You see Mr. President, the smell of sterile operating rooms, horrible coffee, crisp white coats, and cold metal was my destiny. The first time someone ever asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I responded, “Anesthesiologist”. I had no idea what they even did, but it was the first big word I learned to pronounce as a 6-year-old. The hospital is my family. It’s all I’ve ever known.

Twenty-one years after my birth, in the same hospital, I listened to a fetal heart beat through my very own stethoscope as a student. You know, it’s quite magical. As the cool, metallic bell lies upon the tight skin of a young mother’s stomach anxiety, fear and joy are all present in her face. A week before my birthday I stood at the side of the laboring mother. There’s no other way to explain childbirth than witnessing the face of God. The emotion is enveloping. You can only try (unsuccessfully) to hold the tears back. I knew at that moment what a gift God had given me. To be allowed the involvement of such a beautiful, pure moment was not to be unappreciated.

When I started college I knew where I was going. You had just won the election. I remember the cameras focusing in on Oprah Winfrey’s face. Tears streamed down. At the time, I knew nothing about politics. My biggest concern was a girl in my Anatomy & Physiology class I had a crush on. I paid little attention to Washington DC.

I worked hard. Multiple all-nighters, falling asleep behind the wheel of my car countless times, thousands of shots of espresso (I actually took a job at Starbucks to support the habit) and 15k note-cards later I had graduated in the top 5% of the country. However, during those last few years something changed.

We studied medical legislation for an entire semester. It’s no secret that the federal government has over-burdened the healthcare market, which has manifested astronomical costs to consumers. However, in 2010, democrats forced through the partisan Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which was later funded by both democrats and republicans.

Since the passage of Obamacare everything has changed. When I started college I never intended to work for the government. I never thought I’d have a government bureaucrat dictate what I was worth to the market, and I certainly never imagined those same bureaucrats (who have absolutely no medical training) telling me how to treat my patients.

I remember the day Obamacare became law. I was sitting in the hospital working in the anesthesia department part-time to cover the costs of tuition. Dr. Alfery, a mentor of mine, looked over at me and said, “Run– It’s not too late to change majors.”

Your legislation has caused countless doctors to go into retirement early, opt for cash-only practices, and has discouraged bright, young minds from entering the field.

With student loans reaching $300k, incalculable opportunity costs and 8 years lost to school, students seeking medical degrees give their lives to the practice. Starting our careers at 30 while dictating to us how much money we can make is nothing short of destroying all incentive to enter the field.

Since that day I’ve yet to find a doctor who recommends the field. People respond to my complaints, “It’s still going to be a good job”. I don’t want a “good job”. I have not fought for a government entitlement of a “good job”. I want an incredible career. That’s what I have fought tirelessly for.

I have been on a path to enter the Air Force and continue my education in medicine. I have been dreaming of specializing in pediatric neurosurgery for half a decade.

After quite literally losing my hair from the internal conflict, considering the sunk costs and evaluating different avenues I have decided.

I have decided that I believe in the principles of a truly free-market, and I trust the free-market. Because of this deep, internal value system I cannot, with clear conscience, continue on this path. My life has value. Such value cannot be calculated by Washington bureaucrats. I won’t allow it. Only a true free-market can accurately assess the value I am capable of.

Mr President, I’m leaving the medical field. I’m hanging up the white coat. However, let me be clear. You have not won. Unless something “changes”, you’ve lost and will continue to lose. You will fail because you lack principle. Meanwhile, we will succeed because we are born of principle.

Regards,

Michael Gordon Lotfi

#STOPGUNCONTROL Obama Pushes Against Against 2nd Amend “Constitutional Scholar?”  My A$$

Obama is pushing the envelope because he is a radical, Communist. Period.

Gun control will not stop the sons of Obama from murdering whites and each-other; It will embolden them. Gun control will make us into a 3rd world ghetto with all people’s in USA running wild, murdering each other.   If Obama has his way, you will be victims on the streets to criminals, murderers, rapists.  So, why is he going after guns, again, being his presidency is in the ashcan??  Because Obama is aCOMMUNIST.   He has to create as much havoc as he possibly can to start a bloody, Bolshevik Revolt.

Barack Obama is also setting himself up to be a martyr:  He has thrown his own base under the bus because they thought that Obama-care would not affect anyone that was poor or middle class.  It is ONLY affecting the poor and middle class.  This will turn bad for Hussein, one of his own supporters will possibly ‘take him out.’  Oh well. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

See the story here about this idiot vamping up G.Control, again….

STOP BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.

Obama: “Islam has Always Been a Part of America’s History”

This from Patriot UpDate.

These spawns of Satan were involved in American History as barbary coast Pirates

then Satan’s spawn became involved in American History on September 11,2001.

The smelly goat humpers flew airplanes into The Twin Towers and the Pentagon and crashed

Flight 93 in a field in Pennsylvania as result 3,000 Americans died.

But no other time have the Moose Slimes had any involvement in American History.

Recently I gave a speech to a regional Republican group.  After my speech I took questions from the audience.  One of the questions had nothing to do with the topic of my speech, but it was an excellent question nonetheless.  I was asked to comment on the accuracy of President Obama’s statement made during a speech in Egypt that “Islam has always been a part of America’s history.”  My response was simple. I said the President’s comment was “absurd” and that I would like him to explain what significant role in America’s history Muslims have played.  In this column I take a closer look at the President’s comment.

If the President’s comment was accurate, one would expect that Muslims played a role in the founding of our country.  Let’s examine that contention.  Fifty-six Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence and, although they were all religious men in various degrees, not one of them subscribed to the Islamic religion.  On the contrary, the signers of the Declaration of Independence included 32 Episcopalians/Anglicans, 13 Congregationalists, 12 Presbyterians, 2 Quakers, 2 Unitarians, and one Catholic.

President Obama is a highly-educated man.  Surely he would not claim that “Islam has always been a part of America’s history” without first checking the facts.  Maybe George Washington had a regiment or two of Muslim troops during America’s War of Independence. After all, the British had their German Hessians as mercenaries.  I checked.  General Washington had no Muslims under his command, mercenaries or otherwise.  In fact, it looks like the prayers that were lifted up from Valley Forge were all directed to the God of the Holy Bible.  Not all of George Washington’s troops were devout Christians, but not one of them was a Muslim.

But let me give the President the benefit of the doubt.  If Muslims played no role in the development of the Declaration of Independence or in helping win our War of Independence, perhaps one or more of the framers of the Constitution subscribed to Islam.  I looked into this possibility. The principle author of the Constitution was James Madison but other framers also played significant roles including John Dickinson, Gouverneur Morris, Edmund Randolph, Roger Sherman, James Wilson, and George Wythe.  The work of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Thomas Paine influenced the framers of the Constitution but these three stalwarts played no direct role in the development of the document.  Not one of these men was a Muslim.

Still giving President Obama the benefit of the doubt, I thought that perhaps Muslims helped the Allied cause during World War II.  After all, the war encompassed the entire globe including the Islamic countries of the Middle East and Northern Africa.  I thought that perhaps the President was on to something, so I checked the historical record.  It turns out that Arabs were indeed involved in World War II and although their record is mixed, they leaned heavily in favor of Adolph Hitler and the Nazis.  In fact, the Grand Mufti, Haj Amin al-Husseini, actively collaborated with the Nazis.  Once again it appears that the president’s fact checkers were a little lax in the history department.

Still wanting to be fair, I thought that perhaps President Obama was referring to a major role Muslims played in helping win the battle for Civil Rights in America. After all, the Civil Rights movement was a watershed moment in America’s history. Maybe Muslims helped Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. slay the dragon of Jim Crow during his epic battles against bigotry in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma.  Once again I referred to the historical record.  Sorry, Mr. President.  I found nothing about Muslims lending a hand to the Civil Rights leaders.  In fact, those people walking arm-in-arm with Dr. King during the Civil Rights battles were Jews, not Muslims.

It appears that President Obama is guilty of inventing history as a way to please his Egyptian audience.  What is even worse than the President’s inaccurate and misleading statement about the role of Muslim’s in America’s history is how the mainstream media simply ignored it.  Had the President been a Republican, mainstream media mavens would have suddenly become experts in American history and taken him to task for making inaccurate, misleading, and undocumented statements in front of a foreign audience.  But holding the President’s feet to the fire concerning his public statements no longer interests the mainstream media.  When a Democrat is the subject of controversy, journalistic ethics go out the window.
